I am very grateful here to our fellow Member Albert Deß as the representative of a border region of Upper Palatinate, who is vehement in urging us to fight, jointly as a European Union, against trafficking in drugs, human beings and arms, which originates with this criminal structure in Transnistria; that is in the interests of this beautiful country on the eastern edge of Central Europe, which needs to be integrated because otherwise it will fester like a wound between Romania, which is soon to be a Member State, and Ukraine, with which we have entered into a more intensive partnership since the orange revolution there.

Au cours des quelques minutes dont je dispose pour cette première intervention, je ne vais pas entrer plus avant dans les détails, mais je voudrais dire que les élections qui vont se tenir en Ukraine, pas dans un an mais dans deux mois, seront absolument essentielles pour nous tous, non seulement pour l’Union européenne, mais également pour l’Ukraine, sans aucun doute, et pour tous les pays de la partie orientale de notre continent, qui seront affectés par leurs résultats.
In the few minutes I am allowed for this first speech, I shall not go into any more detail, but I would like to say that the elections that are going to take place in Ukraine, not in a year’s time, but in two months’ time, will be absolutely fundamental to all of us, not just for the European Union, but also for Ukraine, undoubtedly, and for all of the countries of the eastern part of our continent, which will be affected by their results.
