Nous savons que l'Ukraine occidentale était l'ancienne Pologne orientale. Autant nous devons naturellement garantir la sécurité des frontières - et nous devons tout mettre en œuvre pour que la mafia, le trafic de drogue et la grande criminalité ne puisse pas pénétrer dans l'Union européenne par cette frontière orientale de la Pologne -, autant nous devrions faire preuve de flexibilité pour que les personnes qui ont des connaissances par delà cette frontière - qui vivent en Ukraine occidentale et sont d'origine polonaise - bénéficient également de solutions flexibles pour se rencontrer, et ce, afin qu'un nouveau rideau de fer ne se dresse pas entre les hommes. C'est, je crois, un point très important dans le cadre de nos relations avec l'Ukraine.
However much we, naturally, have to guarantee border security – and we must make every effort to ensure that the Mafia, drug trafficking and serious crime cannot get into the European Union across Poland's eastern border – we should, at the same time, be flexible in order that the people there who have ties across the border, who live in Western Ukraine and are of Polish origin, may also have flexible solutions in their dealings with Poland, so that no new Iron Curtain may descend there to separate people from each other. I believe that this will be of immense significance as regards our relations with the Ukraine.

With regard to the last topic concerning asylum and immigration, the German delegation voiced the preoccupations of EU Member States and stressed the importance of developing common strategies in order to secure external borders and to tackle the organized crime linked frequently to asylum seeking and illegal immigration.
