Brussels, 06 June 2011 - The European Commission has cleared under EU State aid rules the Danish support towards the liquidation of Eik Bank, as it provided for an orderly wind-up of the bank and foresees sufficient safeguards to limit distortions of competition.

The Prime Minister, who was accompanied by Mr. Imre Réthy, State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy and Transport and Mr. István Salgó, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Mr. János Eros, Chief Executive Officer of the Hungarian Bank for Development, discussed with EIB representatives development of Hungarian infrastructure, especially the project of extension of the Hungarian motorway network and upgrading of the Budapest metro in addition to EIB support in other fields such as research and development.

A la lumière des discussions, la présidence a, en conclusion, souligné l'importance des infrastructures de recherche génomique, qui apportent une valeur ajoutée européenne à la recherche et sont des structures spécialisées destinées à servir la recherche en général dans l'Union européenne ; elle a également souligné qu'il était souhaitable d'améliorer la cohérence et la complémentarité de ces infrastructures à l'échelle européenne et leur compétitivité à l'échelle mondiale ; elle a noté que les difficultés financières auxquelles doivent actuellement faire face ces infrastructures illustrent combien il est important, dans le cadre de l'espace européen de la recherche, que les États membres et la Commission, éventuellement avec la participation de la Banque européenne d'investissement, s'emploient conjointement à élaborer une stratégie à long terme destinée à coordonner le soutien aux infrastructures de recherche clés au niveau européen ; elle a invité la Commission à explorer, à bref délai, les solutions qui pourraient être apportées aux problèmes actuels, en conformité avec les décisions prises en ce qui concerne le cinquième programme-cadre et le programme spécifique "Qualité de la vie", de manière à permettre au Conseil de réexaminer cette question d'une manière plus approfondie lors de sa prochaine session.
In the light of discussions, the Presidency concluded by: underlining the importance of genomic research infrastructures which generate European added value in research and are dedicated structures to serve research at large in the European Union; emphasising the desirability of improving the European-wide consistency and complementarity of these infrastructures and their competitiveness at world level; noting that the financial difficulties currently being faced by these infrastructures illustrate how important it is, in the framework of the European Research Area, that the Member States and the Commission, possibly involving the European Investment Bank, seek jointly to develop a long-term strategy for co-ordinating support for key research infrastructures at the European level; and invited the Commission in the short term to explore possible solutions to the current problems, consistent with the decisions taken on the Fifth Framework Programme and on the "Quality of Life" Specific Programme, so as to enable the Council to re-examine this question in greater depth at its next meeting.
