– (PT) Monsieur le Président, avant tout, je voudrais attirer l’attention sur l’importance que le groupe du Parti populaire européen (Démocrates-Chrétiens), et plus précisément les Portugais du groupe PPE, accordent au prochain Conseil, à la solution qui a été trouvée – qui est franchement meilleure par rapport aux attentes de l’époque – et, en particulier, au travail de mes collègues, MM. Brok et Gualtieri. Ceux-ci ont préparé le rapport au nom du Parlement, en accord avec les positions de la Commission, en rapprochant le financement d’un procédé suivant clairement la méthode communautaire et en l’éloignant de ce qui serait la solution intergouvernementale.
– (PT) Mr President, first of all, I would like to draw attention to the value that the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats), and especially the Portuguese of the PPE Group, ascribe to the upcoming Council, to the solution that was found – which is frankly better than was expected at the time – and, in particular, to the work of my colleagues, Mr Brok and Mr Gualtieri, who prepared the report on behalf of Parliament, in line with the Commission’s positions, bringing the fund closer to something that clearly follows the Union method and moving it away from what would be the intergovernmental solution.

Sadly, many of the men who survived are reaching the natural end of their lives, and I am sure my honourable friend shares my view that it would be the ultimate travesty if those who fought in this particular theatre in a fashion that was essential to bring the war to the enemy before the attack on the land mass of Europe by the Allies were allowed to perish without this recognition from their government and their monarch.
