– (PT) Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to begin my answer by reminding you of the position adopted by the Commission with regard to the formation of the new Austrian Government. This was reiterated this morning in President Romano Prodi’s speech on that government which includes Ministers from Jörg Haider’s Freedom Party.
- (PT) Monsieur le Président, Mesdames et Messieurs les Députés, permettez-moi de commencer à répondre en rappelant la position que la Commission avait adoptée à l'égard de la composition du nouveau gouvernement autrichien, réitérée ce matin par le président Romano Prodi au sujet du gouvernement autrichien, qui comporte des ministres appartenant au Parti de la liberté autrichien de M. Jörg Haider.

Among these latest contradictions, which were not included in the question of privilege, but which most certainly could have been included, and I commend the kindness of our friends from the Canadian Alliance for wanting to protect or at least spare the government and the Minister of National Defence from too much worry, but among these contradictions, there is certainly the fact that we were told that the Geneva agreements and the Geneva convention would be respected.

I welcome the statements by the Presidency of the Council and the position of the 14 countries which have rejected official contact with an Austrian Government that includes Jörg Haider’s party.

Including Jörg Haider’s party in a coalition government makes the presence of the extreme right an everyday fact of life in Europe, and sets an extremely dangerous precedent which may generate a serious aftermath in other Union Member States or in candidate countries.

The maximum amount requested by the minister from the Governor-in-Council is based on the projected financial needs of the government, which includes both budgetary and non-budgetary requirements, plus a margin of prudence, as set out in the Debt Management Strategy that is published as part of the annual budget.
