Council presidency initiatives were supported through two conferences. The Summit “Health Inequalities, Governing for Health” which took place in October as part of the United Kingdom Presidency and a conference on the prevention of type 2 Diabetes to take place during the Austrian Presidency in 2006.

Given the difficult — and deteriorating — financial situation in which the Austrian Airlines Group has found itself over the last few years (see Commission Decision of 19 January 2009 on State aid NN 72/08, Austrian Airlines — Rescue aid (3)), the Austrian Government issued a privatisation mandate on 12 August 2008, authorising ÖIAG to dispose of all of its shares in Austrian Airlines.

The negative sales price is made up of State resources, as it is granted directly by an entity (ÖIAG) which is wholly owned and controlled by the State. It is the result of the privatisation mandate by means of which the Austrian Government authorised ÖIAG to sell all of its shares in Austrian Airlines and is therefore imputable to the State.

In this context the Austrian government reports from its national consultations that it was not so much consumers as business which pleaded for full harmonisation of consumer contract law, as opposed to minimum harmonisation, thereby avoiding divergent national implementation.
