Définition: Le patient attribue ses symptômes au trouble somatique d'un système ou d'un organe innervé et contrôlé, en grande partie ou entièrement, par le système neurovégétatif: système cardio-vasculaire, gastro-intestinal, respiratoire, et urogénital. Les symptômes sont habituellement de deux types, aucun des deux n'évoquant un trouble somatique de l'organe ou du système concerné. Le premier type concerne des plaintes en rapport avec des signes objectifs d'un hyperfonctionnement neurovégétatif, par exemple des palpitations, une transpiration, des bouffées de chaleur ou de froid, des tremblements, ainsi que des manifestations traduisant une crainte et un sentiment de détresse quant à la présence possible d'un trouble somatique. Idealiter zou elke patiënt het centrum moeten kunnen bereiken binnen de 30 minuten na het eerste medisch contact. Na de eerste 3 dagen zou de patiënt dan kunnen worden overgebracht naar een andere stroke unit, in een ziekenhuis dichterbij de woonplaats.
Idéalement tout patient devrait pouvoir atteindre une unité de ce type dans les 30 minutes suivant le premier contact médical.

Ten slotte zou de verplichting om een patiënt door te verwijzen naar een ziekenhuis met een stroke unit direct na de trombolyse - en dus in kritieke toestand - de patiënt kunnen blootstellen aan grote risico's en kunnen leiden tot hoge transportkosten.
Enfin, l’obligation de référer un patient vers un hôpital doté d’une unité neuro-vasculaire juste après une thrombolyse – et donc en état critique – pourrait l’exposer à des risques importants, et entraîner des coûts élevés relatifs au transport.
