However, I believe that for such a demanding directive – and Parliament is quite aware that it is not a straightforward one – we must take the current state of affairs of each country, the various aspects of social dialogue, the positions of the social partners and the various discrepancies in all the points I mentioned before, piece them all together and thereby find a very fine balance between them all, so that we can be as successful as we possibly can. If we approve the amendments straight away, and take the new proposal to the negotiating table, then that will necessitate unanimity, which, as we all know, as things stand at present, will not achieve the desired result.

Pour conclure, je voudrais appeler tous ceux de nos collègues qui, par leurs amendements, ont signifié qu'ils n'étaient pas prêts au compromis et insistaient sur la concrétisation intégrale des principes d'harmonisation maximale et du pays d'origine, à se demander ce qui se passerait si nous entamions une procédure de conciliation qui ne serait sans doute pas fructueuse, au vu de l'équilibre politique très délicat que nous avons peiné à trouver.
When it comes to all those of my fellow MEPs who, through their amendments, have signalled that they are not prepared to compromise and are insisting that maximum harmonisation and the country of origin principle be put fully into effect, I should like, finally, to appeal to them also to consider what would happen if we were to end up in a conciliation procedure in which we would probably not succeed in finding this politically very sensitive and very elusive balance.
