In his meeting with Mr. Rushdie, Mr. van den Broek recalled that the Edinburgh European Council had reaffirmed its belief in maintaining a critical dialogue with Iran, and declared that improvements in human rights and the lifting of the fatwa against Salman Rushdie are important in determining the quality of relations with Iran.
