It is clear that many things are moving in terms of this complex equation between war and peace in Palestine: the satisfactory result of the elections in which the Union and Parliament participated – I would also like to mention the efforts of Mr Rocard and Mr McMillan-Scott and others – the fact that we must congratulate ourselves on the fact that support for terrorism in the region has dropped from 65% to 40% since June – and this figure must continue to fall – the need to consolidate a truce with the extremist organisations and the efforts being made by the new President of the Palestinian National Authority to achieve it, which has created a new climate of dialogue, and the gradual realisation by the Israeli Government that there must be a viable Palestinian state, and at the same time a withdrawal from Gaza and the West Bank.
