– (EL) Madam President, Commissioner, in his letter Michel Platini, President of UEFA, asks the leaders of the 27 EU Member States to intervene by dealing with the rising wealth of football clubs, which are spending ever more on players and other purchases, thus turning football into a business rather that a sport with values.

Je suis donc favorable à la réduction des quinze ans prévus dans la proposition initiale de la Commission, mais je ne m'associe pas à l'amendement introduit par M. Chris Davies, qui ne prévoit pas au moins une période de dix ans d'utilisation dans l'Union européenne, notamment parce que - sur la base de la constitution génétique des différentes populations -, sans un usage prolongé dans les États membres, de graves effets toxiques peuvent surgir.
I am therefore in favour of reducing the 15 years laid down in the initial Commission proposal, but I do not agree with Chris Davies’s amendment, which does not provide for at least ten years’ use in the European Union, not least in that, given the genetic make-up of different populations, without extensive use in the Member States severe toxic effects might still emerge.

Cette dernière réunion se déroulait le 18 septembre 2001 au sein du Parlement européen.
The Foreign Ministers thus held a special meeting on the day after; the chairmen of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Policy Committees of the parliaments of the EU Member States and the European Parliament held a joint special meeting at the European Parliament on 18 September 2001 with the representatives of the troika, Foreign Minister Michel, representing the Belgian Presidency, the High Representative, Javier Solana, and Chris Patten, the Member of the Commission responsible for external relations.
