Calls for enhanced efforts to be made to implement the EU 2020 objectives of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth by promoting a stronger European automotive industry; stresses in this context the importance of maintaining a strong automotive manufacturing base in Europe, including by exporting a larger portfolio of high-quality and sustainable-technology vehicles to third countries; points out that research, development and innovation are becoming increasingly important, especially as regards the need to develop low-emission, energy-efficient cars, in order to enable Europe to remain competitive and hence to boost employment by reducing Europe’s dependence on imported energy;

When examining the major policy areas which impact the competitiveness of the European automotive industry the CARS 21 High Level Group, set up by the Commission in 2005 to chart the way towards sustainable development of a competitive European automotive industry, agreed on a number of recommendations aiming at enhancing the industry’s global competitiveness and employment while sustaining further progress in safety and environmental performance.

Deuxièmement, je pense que nous devons rester conscients que l’industrie automobile européenne est la plus grande industrie automobile mondiale – nous sommes exportateurs, nous sommes ceux qui construisent les voitures – et pour cette raison, nous ne devons pas perdre de vue la nécessité de maintenir l’efficacité à long terme et la compétitivité du secteur.
My second point is that we should still bear in mind that the European automobile industry leads the world – we are exporters, those who are producing the cars – and, in this light, we should bear in mind the need for maintaining the long-term effectiveness, as well as the competitiveness of this industry.
