Considers that given the shrinking productivity gap with emerging countries, the EU must work harder to increase its competitive advantage; that a new long term-strategy for a sustainable EU industry is a necessary component of the EU 2020 strategy; that it must focus on cutting-edge industries which can be competitive on the global stage and champion innovative technological solutions in, among others, areas such as energy provision and reducing carbon emissions; that it should achieve a fair shift in employment to a low-carbon economy, make knowledge and creativity the main resource of people, companies and regions, promote the social market economy, and actively support innovation, investment, vocational education, lifelong learning, transmission of knowledge and skills and quality job creation in new areas, particularly ensuring access for young people to these new areas; and that boosting the internalisation of EU companies and its SMEs in particular will also be key to strengthening our competitiveness and potential growth in a globalised world;
