In his 2017 State of the Union address, President Jean-Claude Juncker re-affirmed the European future of the Western Balkans countries: "If we want more stability in our neighbourhood, then we must also maintain a credible enlargement perspective for the Western Balkans".

The high-level Conference on Eastern Mediterranean/Western Balkans route (autumn 2015) will bring together EU Member States, Western Balkan countries and Turkey in order to discuss refugee and migrant flows transiting through the Eastern Mediterranean/Western Balkan routes.

With five Western Balkan countries — Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia — Visa Facilitation Agreements entered into force on 1 January 2008, as a first concrete step forward along the path set out by the Thessaloniki agenda towards a visa-free travel regime for the citizens of Western Balkan countries.
