26. Notes the technological developments in Austria, where the industry is proposing the use of fracking fluids containing only water, sand and cornstarch; recommends that other Member States and the Commission examine the possibility of extracting shale gas without the use of chemicals, and calls for further research and development activity relating to such techniques and/or practices that would mitigate potential impacts on the environment;
26. neemt kennis van de technologische ontwikkelingen in Oostenrijk waar de sector voorstelt om fracvloeistoffen te gebruiken die uitsluitend water, zand en maïszetmeel bevatten; beveelt aan dat de andere lidstaten en de Commissie de mogelijkheid onderzoeken om schaliegas te winnen zonder chemicaliën te gebruiken en dringt aan op nadere onderzoeks- en ontwikkelingsactiviteiten met betrekking tot dergelijke technieken en/of praktijken die mogelijke effecten op het milieu zouden verzachten;
