So I would ask this of Mr. Eidsvik, in particular, and Ms. Logan—I think Mr. Eidsvik has already said it and I'll give a chance to Ms. Logan—if this thing were negotiated in the open and we had input, and ultimately it was voted on after we had this input and passed in something like what has come out here, would you then think, not only for yourself but the people you know and come into contact with—obviously you're coming from a particular side of this—that it would be more favourably received if in fact we'd had an opportunity to be a part of this from the beginning?

Mr. Speaker, as I indicated yesterday in the House, having received extensive input from the Province of Quebec, from major players, including members of the House who took part in an all-party vetting of candidates for the Supreme Court, and having sought outside advice from former Supreme Court of Canada justices, as well as a renowned constitutional expert, Peter Hogg, we proceeded with the best intent to fill this Quebec vacancy on the Supreme Court of Canada.
Monsieur le Président, comme je l'ai dit hier à la Chambre, après avoir reçu de nombreuses observations de la part du Québec, d'acteurs importants, notamment de députés de la Chambre qui représentaient tous les partis et qui ont participé à l'examen des candidats à la Cour suprême, et après avoir demandé un avis externe à d'anciens juges de la Cour suprême du Canada ainsi qu'au constitutionnaliste de renom Peter Hogg, nous sommes allés de l'avant, bien déterminés à combler le siège vacant du Québec à la Cour suprême du Canada.

I am pleased that this House has had major input in the decision-making process, and would like to thank all Members of the House for this, not least Mr Gauzès who, being an authority in this area, has handled this issue with much objectivity, and would also like to thank all shadow rapporteurs.
