Once again, my warmest thanks to the Czech Senate, the Czech Parliament and the Czech Government.

May I also say at this point that I would like to thank the Czech Presidency and, in particular, Prime Minister Topolánek, who, in a situation that was personally difficult for him and for which he was not responsible, on the last day of his term of office fought to get a sufficient majority in the Czech Senate.

I would begin by thanking my colleague Adriana Poli Bortone, now a senator of the Italian Republic, from whom I inherited the draft report and an already detailed, meticulous study of the topic; next my staff, who have supported me enthusiastically and conscientiously in furthering my exploration and analysis of the phenomenon; and finally the shadow rapporteurs, whose commitment undoubtedly contributed to the adoption of the text in the Committee on the Environment, with a virtually unanimous cross-party consensus.

Ceremony on Opening of Famous Five Exhibit Hon. Sheila Finestone: Honourable senators, I think it is appropriate to thank the Senate, the senators and, in particular, His Honour the Speaker, for chairing a ceremony today to honour the memory of five special persons — five women who, in effect, are responsible for one-third of the members of this house.
