Hopes that those responsible for the assassination of Benazir Bhutto are identified and held responsible as soon as possible; notes the worsening human rights situation in Pakistan throughout 2007, including in particular the threats to the independence of the judiciary and the freedom of the media; with that in mind, condemns the defamation campaign against Iftikhar Mohammad Choudhry, former Chief Justice of Pakistan, as well as the fact that he has been removed from office and placed under house arrest; calls on the Council and the Commission to support the movement for democracy started by the judiciary and the bar, particularly by extending invitations to some of their representatives, including Mr Choudhry; calls for the reinstitution of all deposed judges; notes the adoption of a new Country Strategy Paper for Pakistan and welcomes the mainstreaming of conflict prevention and human rights throughout that document; notes that the first meeting of the European Community-Pakistan Joint Commission was held in Islamabad on 24 May 2007 and stresses the need for human rights to be at the forefront of the agenda for all subsequent meetings;

I was reading a speech given by Chief Justice Roy McMurtry, the Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Appeal, on December 3, 2001, before the Canadian Club in Toronto in the aftermath of September 11.

In addition to that, about a year before that, a similar, and I would say perhaps an even more comprehensive, review was attempted in Ontario, at the behest of the then Attorney General of Ontario, now Chief Justice, Roy McMurtry. That came forward in another excellent report, called The Ontario Civil Justice Review.
