De Belgian Stroke Council publiceerde in 2009 erkenningscriteria voor stroke units.

De definitie van stroke unit die wordt voorgesteld door de Belgian Stroke Council luidt als volgt: " een afzonderlijke geografische eenheid in het ziekenhuis die specifiek gewijd is aan patiënten die een cerebrovasculair accident doormaken (of waar een CVA vermoed wordt- zolang de neurologische diagnose nog niet werd gesteld of nog niet duidelijk is), met een multidisciplinair team dat geïnteresseerd is in en deskundig is op het gebied van CVA's (artsen, verpleegkundigen, kinesitherapeuten en daarnaast ook ergotherapeuten, logopedisten, case managers, zorgverleners of andere professionals die het vertrek uit de unit moeten plannen)" .
La définition de l’unité neuro-vasculaire proposée par le Belgian Stroke Council est la suivante : « une entité géographique distincte au sein d’un hôpital, spécifiquement dédiée aux patients atteints d’AVC (ou suspects d’AVC – tant que le diagnostic neurologique n’a pas encore été posé ou n’est pas clair), avec une équipe multidisciplinaire ayant un intérêt et une expertise pour la prise en charge des AVC (médecins, infirmiers, kinésithérapeutes, mais également ergothérapeutes, logopèdes et case managers, travailleurs sociaux ou autres professionnels chargés de planifier la sortie de l’unité)».

In maart 2005 lanceerde de wetenschappelijke vereniging Belgian Stroke Council met onze steun een nationale sensibiliseringscampagne over cerebrovasculaire accidenten (CVA) of beroerte.
En mars 2005, l’association scientifique Belgian Stroke Council a lancé, avec notre soutien, une campagne de sensibilisation nationale sur les accidents vasculaires cérébraux (AVC) aussi appelés hémorragies cérébrales.
