Welcomes the European consensus on development and the EU's clear commitment to addressing countries affected by conflict or state fragility and its equally clear commitment to helping to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), including universal education policy; welcomes the fact that in Pakistan, education was a priority jointly agreed between the Commission and the Pakistan authorities and that some new education projects are already being prepared in the Sindh and North West frontier provinces; calls on the EU to continue its financial and technical support for the government of Pakistan in this regard; calls on the government of Pakistan to significantly increase financial support to the public school system, and to work towards reforming the system, notably through removing sectarian and pro-jihad elements; and to take immediate steps to restore the independence of the judiciary;

Monsieur le Président, je crois par contre qu’il faudrait écarter les éléments suivants: premièrement, l’idée absurde de reporter ce débat après les élections européennes; deuxièmement, l’idée selon laquelle ce qui m’intéresse est pro-européen et ce qui ne m’intéresse pas est anti-européen; troisièmement, l’absurdité de diviser l’Europe avant même son élargissement; et quatrièmement, les récriminations qui ne nous mènent nulle part, à l’exception de quelques personnes, bien entendu - comme le président du groupe du parti socialiste européen - qui croient que le gouvernement de leur pays est le seul à blâmer, quoi qu’il fasse et quoi qu’il arrive.
What I believe should be ruled out, Mr President, is the following: firstly, the absurd idea of postponing this debate until after the European elections; secondly, the idea that what interests me is Europeanist and that what does not interest me is anti-European; thirdly, the nonsense of dividing Europe even before it has been enlarged; and fourthly, the recriminations which get us nowhere, except for some people, of course – such as the President of the Group of the Party of European Socialists – who believe that the government of their country is solely to blame, whatever it does and whatever happens.
