In a declaration on the peace process issued on 17 February, the Community and the Member States expressed their determination to play an important part in this process: the declaration stressed that Middle East was a neighbouring region with which Europe had long had political, historical, cultural, economic and trade links, and that the stability and security of the region were essential to the stability and security of Europe itself. In this respect, it is significant that the next meeting of the Steering Committee for the multilateral phase of the peace process is due to be held in Lisbon, the capital of the current Community Presidency.
