C’est pourquoi nous nous sentons très émus moralement, et stimulés intellectuellement, en recevant la charge et l’honneur de présider l’Union dans une phase constitutive, à un moment où il convient de s’appuyer fermement sur la leçon tirée du passé pour construire l’avenir, pour faire face à des évolutions nouvelles et à des circonstances inconcevables hier encore, pour surmonter les différends existants et les transmuer en une nouvelle richesse à investir dans le projet commun.
Italy is therefore keenly aware of the moral and intellectual responsibility and honour of presiding over the Union in this constituent period, when we need to hold on firmly to the lessons of the past in order to build the future, to deal with new developments and seize opportunities that were previously unimaginable, and to overcome differences by finding new solutions, which in turn will enrich our shared project.
