– (EN) Madame la Présidente, nous devrions à présent être en train de discuter des problèmes de gouvernance économique, de droit à l’emploi et d’environnement, des points prioritaires dans notre programme; nous devrions être en train de célébrer la fantastique réussite de la Hongrie qui a ,pour la première fois, l’honneur de la Présidence et je suis attristée de constater que le peuple hongrois – qui s’est élevé contre l’oppression et qui a lutté tellement longtemps pour la démocratie – voit maintenant cette démocratie remise en question par la nouvelle loi hongroise sur les médias et par des politiques protectionnistes qui attaquent les entreprises étrangères et jettent une ombre sur ce qui devrait être un moment de fierté pour le peuple hongrois.
– Madam President, this is a time when we should be discussing issues of economic governance, employment rights and the environment, all high on our agenda; a time when we should be celebrating the fantastic achievement of Hungary which, for the first time, has the honour of the Presidency, and it saddens me that the Hungarian people – who stood up against oppression and fought for so long for democracy – are now having that democracy challenged by the new media laws in Hungary and the protectionist policies used to attack foreign companies, casting a shadow on what should be a proud period for the Hungarian people.

Je crois qu’il a été dit suffisamment haut et fort que cette Assemblée voit d’un mauvais œil la manière dont l’opposition et la démocratie sont écrasées en Éthiopie à l’heure actuelle. J’espère vraiment que, grâce à ce débat et à la résolution que nous faisons adopter, nous convaincrons la Commission d’affirmer très clairement que les négociations doivent maintenant sérieusement reprendre.
I believe it has to be said very loud and clear that this Parliament is critical of the way in which opposition and democracy are being crushed in Ethiopia at present, and I very much hope that, with this debate and with the resolution we are having adopted, we shall get the Commission to state very clearly that negotiations now need seriously to be got under way.
