- (IT) Monsieur le Président, l'un de nos objectifs est bien sûr d'éviter une guerre, de faire tout pour ne pas en arriver là, mais le problème n'est pas seulement celui de définir notre position pour ou contre une éventuelle intervention armée : le problème est de voir ce que l'Europe, l'Union européenne, peut faire, non seulement pour tenter d'éviter un conflit armé, mais aussi pour tenter d'arrêter le massacre de la population irakienne commis par le dictateur Saddam Hussein, pour faire tout ce qui est possible pour arrêter ce qui, selon toute probabilité, constitue une escalade de Saddam Hussein vers la préparation d'armes de destruction massive, avec la possibilité concrète, le risque concret, que ces armes soient utilisées.
– (IT) Mr President, one of our objectives is certainly to prevent war, to do everything possible to ensure that war is avoided, but the problem is not just defining our position for or against a possible armed intervention: the problem is seeing what Europe, the European Union, can do not just to try and avoid armed conflict but to try and stop the massacre of the Iraqi people by the dictator, Saddam Hussein, too, to do everything in its power to stop what is, in all probability, Saddam Hussein’s build-up towards the development of weapons of mass destruction, with the genuine possibility, the real danger that these weapons will be used.
