I would like to think it would be very important that Canada have a seat at any future negotiations, so if there is to be a further extension beyond 1998 we are in fact taking a proactive role in it, not sitting back and following the mandate and trying to make up for a package that isn't necessarily whole.

Je remercie tout particulièrement le Commissaire Barrot, pas seulement pour ce qu’il a eu la gentillesse de dire, mais surtout pour l’action très vigoureuse qu’il a entreprise vis-à-vis du sujet du rapport et pour sa volonté de mettre en place une coopération entre le Parlement et la Commission de sorte que nous puissions effectivement jouer le rôle que nous tenons tous à jouer pour faire évoluer la mobilité – comme il l’a dit à juste titre dans sa brève intervention – plutôt que pour la réduire.
Particular thanks to Commissioner Barrot, not just for what he has been so kind as to say, but in particular for the very vigorous action that he is undertaking in respect of the subject matter of the report and for his willingness to enter into cooperation between Parliament and the Commission so that we can play the effective part that we are all keen to play in changing mobility – as he has rightly said in his brief statement –rather than reducing it.
