CURRENT TRENDS The following trends can be discerned from the latest data gathered by the Commission : - the target improvement of 20 % for energy efficiency will probably not be reached ; - oil consumption will probably continue to diminish and approach the set objective of about 40 % ; oil imports are likely to stand at around one third of total energy consumption ; - the share of natural gas in the Community's energy balance is likely to remain steady ; - the share of solid fuels in energy consumption has recently been tending to decline slightly ; there is a risk that this trend will continue in future so that the objectives will not be attained ; - the proportion of electricity generated from oil and gas will probably be around 15 % ; solid fuels and nuclear energy will probably have a respective share of 44 % and 38 % ; - renewable energy sources will probably represent almost 2 % of the Community's overall energy balance.
