Points out that ferrous scrap is a strategic raw material and supports the Commission’s action to improve freedom of access to raw materials markets, particularly markets for iron ore, coking coal and recyclable materials, and considers that such freedom of access is an important element for ensuring the competitiveness of the European steel industry in global terms; stresses, however, that steel recycling needs to be incentivised to make the EU steel industry more sustainable and more independent from imports of raw materials, to make production more efficient while fostering innovation with regard to production processes and reducing the environmental impact of steel manufacturing along the whole production chain, and in order to boost demand for sustainable steel construction products; urges the Commission to start standardisation activities related to sustainability for steel construction products (SustSteel);
