Subject to the professional judgement of the pathologist and the kind of alterations observed, other stains may be considered appropriate to identify and characterise particular types of alterations (e.g. glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) or lectin histochemistry to assess glial and microglial alterations (72), fluoro-jade to detect necrosis (73)(74), or silver stains specific for neural degeneration (75)).
