– (DA) Mr President, President-in-Office of the Council, Commissioner, following on from this morning’s debate, it is encouraging to be able to read in the telegrams from Johannesburg that the President-in-Office of the Council, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, and the American Secretary of State, Colin Powell, held a meeting this morning in Johannesburg at which it was established that the United States would consult its allies about Iraq and that the US agreed with the EU about firstly trying to get Iraq to give international weapons inspectors free and unfettered access to the country.

Hier, nous avons entendu le président français, et je pense qu’il a introduit des nuances très positives en annonçant que sa proposition pour une Union méditerranéenne n’excluait tout d’abord personne et qu’il fallait ensuite l’ajouter à l’acquis de la politique euro-méditerranéenne tout en essayant d’aller au-delà.
Yesterday we heard the French President speak, and I think he introduced some very positive nuances in that he noted that his proposal for a Mediterranean Union excludes no one, first of all, secondly it must be added to the acquis of the Euro-Mediterranean policy and, thirdly, it must try to go beyond it.
