Established in 2001, the Gateway to Freedom Monument in Hart Plaza in Detroit, Michigan, and its companion, the Tower of Freedom Monument across the river in Windsor, Ontario, forever mark the hope, thanksgiving and bittersweet reality of loved ones lost or left behind on the perilous northward journey to freedom in Canada of slaves of African descent fleeing the southern U.S. As we celebrate our collective heritage this anniversary, let us stand in solidarity to declare that all mankind is created equal; to honour the courage of those fleeing slaves, and all people of good will who were an indispensable part of the underground railroad, and the ultimate abolition of slavery; and resolve to do all we can today to ensure our birthright of freedom is experienced by all.

Monsieur le Président, durant le Mois de l'histoire des Noirs, nous célébrons notre riche histoire et patrimoine afro-canadien, marqué par: Mathieu Da Costa, qui a accompagné Samuel de Champlain au XVI siècle; le Dr Anderson Ruffin Abbott, le premier chirurgien noir du Canada, qui a veillé au chevet d'Abraham Lincoln sur son lit de mort; le héros de mon enfance, le légendaire Jackie Robinson, le premier joueur de baseball noir à jouer en ligue majeure, d'abord dans l'équipe des Royaux de Montréal, puis dans celle des Dodgers de Brooklyn; mon compatriote québécois, le pianiste Oscar Peterson, ainsi que la très honorable Michaëlle Jean, sans parler de tous les Canadiens noirs dont les efforts et les succès ont contribué à l'édification de nos collectivités et de notre pays.
Mr. Speaker, Black History Month engages us in a celebration of our rich African-Canadian heritage and history, including Mathieu Da Costa, who accompanied Samuel de Champlain in the 16th century; Dr. Anderson Ruffin Abbott, Canada's first black licensed surgeon, who stood vigil at the deathbed of Abraham Lincoln; my own childhood hero, the legendary Jackie Robinson, the first ball player to break the colour line with the Montreal Royals before joining the Brooklyn Dodgers; my fellow Quebecker, pianist Oscar Peterson and the Right Hon. Michaëlle Jean, let alone all those black Canadians whose struggles and successes have helped build community and country.
