Following the decision today by a Libyan appeal court to clear nine policemen and a doctor accused of mistreating 5 Bulgarian nurses currently in jail in Tripoli, the European Commissioner for External Relations and Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner said:

Lors de ma récente visite en Libye, j’ai été encouragée par les assurances qui m’ont été données par les autorités du pays selon lesquelles ces normes juridiques seraient respectées, tant dans le cadre de ce procès qu’en ce qui concerne la future décision de la Cour suprême relative au procès contre les infirmières bulgares et le médecin palestinien déjà condamnés à mort.
During my recent visit I was encouraged by the assurances given by the Libyan authorities that these legal standards would be maintained in the context of this trial as well as in the future Supreme Court decision on the trial against the Bulgarian and Palestinian medics already sentenced to death.

Madame Ferrero-Waldner a évoqué le cas des travailleurs de la santé bulgares et palestinien condamnés à mort en Libye lors de rencontres avec les plus hautes autorités, dont le colonel Muammar Kadhafi et monsieur Shokri Ghanem, Premier ministre libyen, au cours de sa visite en Libye des 24 et 25 mai.
Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner raised the case of Bulgarian and Palestinian medical workers under sentence of death in Libya in talks with the highest authorities, including Colonel Muammar Khadafi and Libyan Prime Minister, Shokri Ghanem, during her visit to Libya on 24-25 May.
