– having regard to the statements of 23 June and 30 September 2011 by the UN Secretary-General on the lengthy sentences imposed on 21 Bahraini political activists, human rights defenders and opposition leaders, including in some cases life imprisonment, and the Statement by the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on Bahrain on 15 February 2012,

Nous invitons donc la commission des affaires constitutionnelles à modifier l’acte portant élection des représentants au Parlement européen au suffrage universel direct, afin d’imposer l’absence de condamnations pénales, y compris les condamnations qui ne sont pas encore définitives, comme condition pour pouvoir se présenter aux élections au Parlement européen.
We therefore call on the Committee on Constitutional Affairs to amend the Act concerning the election of representatives of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage to make it a condition, in order to stand for election to the European Parliament, not to have any criminal convictions, including those that have not become final.

2. 2.
