Permettez-moi de dire, avec la plus grande circonspection, que dans l'hypothèse où, à la fin de l'année 2004 - lorsque la Commission devra présenter son rapport et sa recommandation - la situation à Chypre serait inchangée, autrement dit, si elle était exactement comme elle est aujourd'hui, nous nous trouverions face à un pays - la Turquie - qui voudrait mener avec nous des négociations d'adhésion et qui ne reconnaîtrait pas un État membre, à savoir, Chypre.
Today, what I can say, with all due caution, is that if, at the end of 2004 – when the Commission has to table its report and recommendation – the situation in Cyprus were to remain unchanged, that is be exactly the same as it is today, then we would have a situation where a country, namely Turkey, wished to negotiate accession with us but did not recognise one of our Member States, namely Cyprus.
