– (FR) J’ai voté le rapport de mon collègue britannique Michael Cashman, en 1 lecture et selon la procédure de codécision sur le régime simplifié de contrôle des personnes aux frontières extérieures de l’Union fondé sur la reconnaissance unilatérale par la Bulgarie, la République tchèque, Chypre, la Lettonie, la Hongrie, Malte, la Pologne, la Roumanie, la Slovénie et la Slovaquie de certains documents comme équivalant à leurs visas nationaux aux fins de transit par leur territoire.
– (FR) I voted for the report by my British fellow Member Michael Cashman at first reading according to the codecision procedure, on the simplified regime for the control of persons at the external borders based on the unilateral recognition by Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Latvia, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia of certain documents as equivalent to their national visas for the purposes of transit through their territories.

- (EN) Monsieur le Président, je voudrais tout d’abord associer pleinement le groupe socialiste aux remarques du commissaire Verheugen à propos de Chypre. Mon collègue M. Poos approfondira certainement ce sujet un peu plus tard.
– Mr President, I wish to begin by fully associating the Socialist Group with the remarks of Commissioner Verheugen in relation to Cyprus; no doubt my colleague Mr Poos will say more about that later.

Comme vous ne l’ignorez pas, le Conseil avait invité la Commission, suite à l’échec du référendum sur la réunification de Chypre en avril 2004 - et je voudrais m’associer pleinement à l’ensemble des propos tenus par mon collègue, le commissaire Verheugen -, à présenter des propositions générales en vue de mettre un terme à l’isolement de la communauté chypriote turque.
As the House is aware, the Council invited the Commission, after the failure of the referendum on the reunification of Cyprus in April 2004 – and I would like to wholly associate myself with everything that my colleague, Commissioner Verheugen, said about that – to bring forward comprehensive proposals to put an end to the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community.

Chers collègues, permettez-moi cependant, en raison précisément de cette origine qui est la mienne, d'exprimer mon émotion, parce que parallèlement à la Lituanie et aux autres pays, Chypre va, elle aussi, adhérer à l'Union. Je tiens aussi à remercier toutes les institutions de l'UE, et particulièrement mon collègue, M. Poos, qui par leur travail exceptionnel ont permis de faire face à une question aussi grave et de lui donner l'issue la plus positive possible.
Ladies and gentlemen, allow me, precisely because of my origins, to say how moved I am that Cyprus will be acceding to the Union at the same time as Lithuania and the other countries, and to thank Mr Poos in particular and all the institutions of the European Union, for doing such an excellent job of addressing such a serious issue and finding the best possible outcome. Cyprus, the island of Aphrodite, or in the words of the modern poet, ‘the golden green leaf tossed into the sea’.
