Definition: States of subjective distress and emotional disturbance, usually interfering with social functioning and performance, arising in the period of adaptation to a significant life change or a stressful life event. Definition: The main features are multiple, recurrent and frequently changing physical symptoms of at least two years' duration. Most patients have a long and complicated history of contact with both primary and specialist medical care services, during which many negative investigations or fruitless exploratory operations may have been carried out. Symptoms may be referred to any part or system of the body. The course of the disorder is chronic and fluctuating, and is often associated with disruption of social, interpersonal, and family behaviour. The modernisation of higher education has been acknowledged as a core condition for the success of the Lisbon Strategy which the European Union launched in March 2000 and which aims at restructuring the economic and social systems within the EU. At the same time, the Tempus programme has assisted partner countries in reforming their higher education systems in line with the principles of the Bologna process such as the new degree system, quality assurance and recognition of degrees and study periods.
