While the Union must maintain and increase the competitiveness of the Community pharmaceutical industry the ways of doing so must none the less take account of the specific nature of this industry, one, because its products play an essential role in the public's health and, two, because the way in which the consumption of pharmaceuticals is financed has a direct impact on the social security budgets of the Member States.
De Unie moet de concurrentiekracht van de communautaire farmaceutische industrie op peil houden en versterken; bij de uitwerking van concrete maatregelen moet echter rekening worden gehouden met het specifieke karakter van deze bedrijfstak, enerzijds omdat de produkten daarvan een essentiële rol spelen in de gezondheidszorg, en anderzijds omdat de wijze waarop de consumptie daarvan wordt gefinancierd een zeer directe invloed uitoefent op de budgetten voor sociale zekerheid van de Lid-Staten.
