Internal market Accounting harmonization - Council conclusions The Council - notes the report from the Permanent Representatives Committee in 7559/96; - endorses in principle the Commission's communication of 14 November 1995, in particular as regards its objectives of improving coordination of European work on accounting standards and of allowing the use of International Accounting Standards by companies seeking listings on international capital markets, while maintaining the legal framework established by the EU Accounting Directives; - notes with satisfaction the progress achieved under the auspices of the Accounting Directives Contact Committee in establishing the compatibility of International Accounting Standards with the Accounting Directives; - emphasizes the importance of increasing Europe's influence in the international accounting debate, in particular within the IASC, and the need to provide the technical working party set up under the Contact Committee with the appropriate means; - asks the Commission to continue its discussions in cooperation with the Contact Committee on the development of European accounting standardization for all the undertakings covered by the Accounting Directives, in particular small and medium-sized undertakings, and to submit its initial conclusions as soon as possible.
