The DCI for the period 2007-2013 has a budget of EUR 980 million for South Africa. The national indicative programme for the same period has two priority development-cooperation areas relating to South Africa: firstly, the creation of jobs in the informal economy and incorporating those jobs into the formal economy; and, secondly, the establishment of infrastructure facilities for the supply of basic social welfare services and for social cohesion.

In the first seven months of 2005, 42.9% of all South African imports came from the EU, and 37.6% of all exports went to the EU. Imports from South Africa had only a share of 1.4% on the EU market, in 2005, and 1.7% of all EU exports went to South Africa.

R. whereas the TDCA has enabled the EU to close the gap in the trade balance with South Africa and has put a greater burden on South Africa than on the EU in terms of tariff adjustments, with the effect that the EU benefits more from the current TDCA than does South Africa,

It is a far more important agreement for South Africa than for the EU, given that, in 2004, 41.5% (€ 17.2 billion) of all South African imports came from the EU and 34.5% (€ 12.8 billion) of all South African exports went to the EU. For the EU, the imports from and exports to South Africa represent only a small share of its overall trade flows (1.5% of all imports and 1.7% of all exports in 2004), which illustrates the inequality of the trading relationship between the EU and South Africa, and underlines the need for continued EU support for the economic, social and political development of this important country.
De overeenkomst is voor Zuid-Afrika van veel groter gewicht dan voor de EU: in 2004 was 41,5 % (17,2 miljard euro) van de Zuid-Afrikaanse import uit de EU afkomstig en ging 34,5 % (12,8 miljard euro) van alle Zuid-Afrikaanse export naar de EU.
