Brussels, 25 April 2012 – European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou has told Member States that they need to urgently modernise their higher education systems and remove barriers to a fully functioning European Higher Education Area (EHEA) in response to the crisis and rising youth unemployment.

Higher education ministers from 47 European countries are meeting in Bucharest on 26 and 27 April to agree on reforms to create a modernised, open European Higher Education Area.

On 17 and 18 May, Ministers responsible for Higher Education from 45 European countries will meet in London to discuss progress made in the Bologna Process, which aims to establish a European Higher Education Area by 2010.

(8) The intergovernmental Bologna process of 46 participating countries has resulted in progress to make European higher education more competitive internationally and in reforming some aspects of higher education, including measures to increase mobility and make Europe's citizens more employable through the creation of the European Higher Education Area.

I therefore feel I must stress the importance of consolidating the European higher education area, an assuredly important goal which, although involving the individual universities of the Member States, would affect neither their autonomy nor their cultural history while providing for what will, I am sure, be high-quality teaching.
Ik wil nu echter vooral duidelijk maken dat het noodzakelijk is de Europese ruimte van de universiteiten te bevorderen. Dit is een belangrijk doel. Natuurlijk hebben wij daarvoor de universiteiten van de lidstaten zelf nodig maar wij zijn geenszins van plan daarmee inbreuk te plegen op hun autonomie of op hun culturele achtergrond. Veeleer zal een dergelijke ruimte ons in staat stellen het kwaliteitsniveau van het onderwijs op te trekken.

I find it disquieting that the Commission is being given the task of preparing a Green Paper on the European higher education area.
Ik vind het bedenkelijk dat de Commissie de opdracht heeft gekregen om een Groenboek op te stellen over het creëren van een Europese ruimte voor hoger onderwijs.
