The biocidal products referred to in Article 1 and 2 of this Decision include the biocidal products listed in the table below, identified by their application reference number in the Register for Biocidal Products, as well as all products concerned by an application for mutual recognition of the authorisations of these products:

Glutaraldehyde has been evaluated in accordance with Article 16(2) of Directive 98/8/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council (3) for use in product-type 2, private area and public health area disinfectants and other biocidal products, product-type 3, veterinary hygiene biocidal products, product-type 4, food and feed area disinfectants, product-type 6, in-can preservatives, product-type 11, preservatives for liquid-cooling and processing systems, and product-type 12, slimicides, as defined in Annex V to that Directive, which correspond respectively to product-types 2, 3, 4, 6, 11 and 12 as defined in Annex V to Regulation (EU) No 528/2012.

The Biocidal Product Directive aims to harmonise the European market for biocidal products and their active substances.

The reference Member State shall enter the agreed summary of biocidal product characteristics and the final assessment report in the Register for Biocidal Products, together with any agreed terms or conditions imposed on the making available on the market or use of the biocidal product or biocidal product family.

These products have been subject to EU law since 1998, and since that time almost one thousand products have been authorised under the biocidal products directive.

Under Article 2(1)(a) of Directive 98/8/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 February 1998 concerning the placing of biocidal products on the market (the Biocides Directive) (7), biocidal products are defined as active substances and preparations containing one or more active substances, which are intended to destroy, deter, render harmless, prevent the action of, or otherwise exert a controlling effect on any harmful organism by chemical or biological means.

The Biocides Directive (European Parliament and Council Directive 98/8/EC on the placing of biocidal products on the market) sets environmental and safety standards for biocides.

In contrast to plant protection products, biocidal products control organisms harmful to human or animal health and control organisms which damage natural or manufactured products.
