Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, in the Aymara language, Chile means ‘the place where the world ends’ and sure enough, at the border of the Bio-Bio river, the world ended, because the Spanish conquest came to an end there in the face of fierce Araucanian resistance.
Monsieur le Président, Mesdames et Messieurs, Chili signifie «endroit où se termine le monde» en langue aymara et, à n’en pas douter, la frontière du fleuve Bio-Bio délimite la fin du monde, car la conquête espagnole s’y est arrêtée face à la farouche résistance araucanienne.
