This second official meeting between President Prodi and Prime Minister Phan Van Khai who visited the Commission previously in April 1998 - concluded with a strong commitment from both sides to the continued strengthening and deepening of an already healthy relationship, including support from the European Commission for Vietnam's reform process (DOI MOI) and preparations for joining the WTO (World Trade Organisation) in the context of the Country Strategy and National Indicative Programme agreed with Vietnam in 2002, which earmarks €101 million for bilateral co-operation with Vietnam over the next three years.

La Commission européenne a notamment exprimé son soutien au processus de réforme (DOI MOI) et aux préparatifs du pays en vue de son accession à l'OMC (Organisation mondiale du commerce). Ces événements s'inscrivent dans le cadre de la stratégie de coopération et du programme indicatif national conclu avec le Viêt Nam en 2002 qui prévoit une enveloppe de 101 millions d'euros en faveur de la coopération bilatérale au cours des trois prochaines années.
