I shall always treasure the memory of the time I have spent on the important work of building Europe and of the precious assistance my immediate staff have given me. I owe a debt of thanks to the Portuguese Prime Minister who originally proposed that I be appointed to the Commission; he has always honoured me with his trust and understanding in the delicate tasks involved. Nor shall I ever forget my fellow Members of the Commission, especially President Jacques Delors, whose intellectual and political authority is the leading source of inspiration for all the Commission does.
