As a senator from New Brunswick, I feel, along with my colleagues from New Brunswick and together with our other Maritime colleagues, that we would have a tremendous responsibility to counterbalance the awesome power that would otherwise be exercised if only half of our bicameral Parliament addressed something that can only speak for Central Canada.

I shall, of course, give the Commission an opportunity to add to some of the observations that I shall be making. I would like to start by emphasising the need we all feel, at EU level, to reconcile the extraordinary development and progress that we have seen in many areas of life – not least because of the marked technological impetus over recent years, which has benefited people in all walks of life, throughout the world, in terms of well-being and improvements in living conditions – with the fact that, at the same time, there has been a substantial increase in the pronounced imbalances between some regions and geopolitical areas of the world. This endangers the stability of the international system and jeopardises peace. We are all therefore duty-bound to seek to match our policies better to this objective of achieving greater stability and greater balance in the various parts of our planet.

Given that the Dudkas have been living in Mascouche since January 7, 1992, but failed to obtain refugee status, that both parents have stable employment, that the family has adjusted harmoniously to the Quebec society, that support for the Dudkas is already widespread, that there are two children in this family, one of whom was born in Quebec, and that their lives would be in danger if they were forced to return to Argentina, I feel duty bound to ask the minister to consider this petition and grant refugee status to the Dudka family in Quebec.
Considérant que la famille Dudka est établie à Mascouche depuis le 7 janvier 1992, que cette famille s'est vu refuser son statut de réfugié, que les deux parents occupent des emplois stables, qu'ils se sont intégrés complètement à la société québécoise, que de nombreux appuis leur ont été accordés à ce jour, que la famille se compose en plus de deux enfants, dont un est né au Québec, et aussi considérant que leur vie serait menacée dans leur pays d'origine advenant un retour forcé en Argentine, je me dois de demander au ministre de porter attention à cette pétition et d'accepter le statut de réfugié de la famille Dudka au Québec.
