I understand the despair, the rage, the humiliation, the collective punishments, the retaliation, the need of the Palestinians forced to live under military occupation for 30 years for freedom; I understand the historical fear of the Israeli people, the persecutions they have suffered, the unique experience of the Shoah, for which we Europeans are responsible; I understand the fear that a bomb might explode under a bus or a shell hit a school, but these fears do not give anyone the right to occupy another people's territory or to violate international human rights.
Je comprends le désespoir, la colère, l’humiliation, les sanctions collectives, les représailles, les besoins de liberté des Palestiniens contraints à vivre sous occupation militaire depuis 34 ans ; je comprends la peur ancestrale de la population israélienne, les persécutions qu’elle a subies, le caractère unique de la Shoah dont nous autres Européens portons la responsabilité ; je comprends la peur qu’une bombe puisse exploser dans un autobus ou qu’un tir de mortier puisse atteindre une école, mais ces craintes ne donnent pas le droit d’occuper le territoire d’un autre peuple et de violer les droits de l’homme internationaux.
