President Romano Prodi, Vice-President Loyola de Palacio and Commissioners Chris Patten, Günter Verheugen, Margot Wallstrom, Philippe Busquin, Pascal Lamy and Antonio Vitorino, will hold discussions with President Putin and the Russian government in Moscow on the eve of the EU's historic eastern enlargement, to welcome the EU's expansion, to underline the opportunities created by the enlargement for EU/Russia relations and to confirm the shared wish of the EU and Russia to create a new Europe without dividing lines.

After the historic enlargement by 10 countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean in 2004, Romania and Bulgaria have now joined the EU at the beginning of 2007.

I believe that my party will continue to back the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the European Union in 2007. The reason for this is that we believe this accession to be the next step in a historical process, namely the gradual enlargement of an area of peace, prosperity and stability to cover the eastern parts of the European continent.

– (DE) Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, apart from the generally accepted historical reasons for the enlargement of the European Union, another factor which has played an important part in our decision in favour of this initiative is that since the fall of the Iron Curtain there have been differences between the West and former Eastern Bloc countries in terms of prosperity, democracy and law and order which cannot be allowed to continue. We therefore have good reasons for working to ensure that prosperity and democracy also have a chance in those countries where that was impossible under Soviet dictatorship.

Within the context of enlargement, this dependence will increase further due to the historic links between Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
