We socialists have tabled two amendments, to which I should like to ask the rapporteur to give her express support, on the social aspects of the processing industry, urging the Commission, the Member States and social operators to boost the collective negotiation designed to improve the quality of employment in this industry, especially bearing in mind that the majority of these jobs are performed by women, who have very little social protection and who, furthermore, commonly work on a highly casual basis.
Les socialistes ont présenté deux amendements pour lesquels je demanderais le soutien formel du rapporteur : ils ont trait aux aspects sociaux de l’industrie de la transformation ; ils prient instamment la Commission, les États membres et les agents sociaux d’encourager une négociation collective qui viserait à l’amélioration de la qualité de l’emploi dans cette industrie, sans oublier, en outre, que la majorité de ces postes de travail sont occupés par des femmes, auxquelles ils offrent très peu de couverture sociale, et qui, en plus, sont très précaires.

But we should remember the harsh reality: it might shock many of us if we were to stop and think, or if we read in the media, that in the countries we live in, the percentage of the population living below the poverty line (bearing in mind the commonly accepted criterion of income less than 60% of the national average income) is 8, 12, 14, 19 and even 22% (with an 18% average in the Union as a whole), and also bearing in mind that, although the European Union has recorded an average rate of GDP growth of 2.5%, levels of poverty and social exclusion are still very high.
Mais la réalité, il convient de le rappeler, est intraitable : beaucoup seraient surpris de découvrir, en y réfléchissant bien ou en lisant les médias que, dans nos pays, 8, 12, 14, 19, voire 22 % (la moyenne européenne étant de 18 %) de la population vit au-dessous du seuil de pauvreté (sur la base du critère communément admis de revenus inférieurs à 60 % du revenu moyen national), et que la situation de pauvreté et d'exclusion sociale se maintient à des niveaux élevés malgré un taux de croissance moyen du PIB de 2,5 % enregistré par l'Union européenne.
