At a special sitting of the Court of Justice, the European Union's highest judicial body, Mr Marcelino Oreja today took the oath of office as the newest member of the European Commission, swearing to be completely independent in the performance of his duties in the general interest of the Community as required by Article 157 of the EC Treaty. Mr Oreja was appointed by decision of the Representatives of the Governments of the Member States, on the nomination of the Spanish Government, and took office on 28 April.
