Larco was established in 1989 as a new corporate entity following the liquidation of Hellenic Mining and Metallurgical S.A. of Larymna (‘Old Larco’).

The Hellenic Mining Watch claims that the Cassandra Mines assets include also substantial real estate, which increases their total value considerably but was not taken into account by the Behre Dolbear report.

Comments were received from four interested parties: from Ellinikos Xrysos, the beneficiary of the alleged measures, on 10 April 2009; from European Goldfields Ltd, the main shareholder of Ellinikos Xrysos, on 10 April 2009; from the Cassandra Mines trade unions on 2 April 2009; from the Hellenic Mining Watch, a Greek society whose purpose is the ‘protection of the environment and the public against the negative consequences of mining and safeguarding of the national wealth’ (4), on 6 April 2009.

On the above matter of employment and environmental protection (see paragraph 45), the Hellenic Mining Watch contradicts the invocation of unemployment reasons for the transfer of the Mines without compliance with legal procedures, claiming that the sale contract did not include any obligation for Ellinikos Xrysos to recruit a certain or minimum number of workers.
S’agissant de la question de l’emploi et de la protection de l’environnement (voir considérant 45), l’Observatoire grec des activités minières conteste l’argument de la perte d’emplois invoqué pour justifier la vente des mines sans respecter les procédures légales. Il maintient que le contrat de vente ne prévoyait aucune obligation pour la société Ellinikos Xrysos de recruter un nombre précis ou minimum de travailleurs.
