Welcomes the statements made by the President of the Commission and by Vice-President Reding announcing a communication setting out possible changes to the Treaties, in addition to the options available under the current Treaties, and calls on its competent committees to examine the following proposals in detail, with a view to strengthening the protection of fundamental rights in the EU Treaties:

In the year before that, listed companies in the EU were given a last chance to self-regulate for more women in board positions, when Commission Vice-President Reding called on them to sign the ‘Women on board pledge for Europe’ in March 2011. Only 24 companies throughout Europe signed.
L'année précédente, des entreprises cotées en bourse dans l'Union européenne avaient eu une dernière occasion de s'autoréguler pour que davantage de femmes occupent un poste d'administrateur, lorsque Viviane Reding, vice-présidente de la Commission, avait invité ces sociétés à adhérer à l'initiative "Davantage de femmes dans les conseils d'administration, une promesse pour l'Europe" en mars 2011. Dans toute l'Europe, seules 24 entreprises y ont adhéré.

As regards the lengths of the leave and the payment to be received by women during this period, I would like to say the following. Vice-President Reding has met many Ministers over the last few months and they have explained that the national leave systems work well and that it is not possible, given the current financial constraints, to increase the length or payment, but the Commission made it very clear that it is not prepared to reduce the level of ambition of this proposal.
En ce qui concerne les durées du congé et la rémunération octroyée aux femmes durant cette période, je voudrais dire ceci: la vice-présidente Reding a rencontré de nombreux ministres ces derniers mois et ils ont expliqué que les régimes nationaux fonctionnent bien et qu’il n’est pas possible, compte tenu des contraintes financières actuelles, d’augmenter la durée ou la rémunération, mais la Commission a dit très clairement qu’elle n’est pas prête à réduire l’ambition de cette proposition.
